American Kawasaki History

Started in the mid-1960s, the American Kawasaki Motorcycle Corporation built on the Japanese tradition of manufacturing that extended back nearly 70 years. An old meat warehouse in Chicago became the first American Kawasaki factory, allowing the company to gain a foothold in the United States market. With little more than a desire to succeed and a factory able to supply them with parts, the fearless businessmen who started this venture created a few two-stroke motorcycles to sell under the brand Omega. Since American riders wanted heavy and powerful bikes, Kawasaki made the Samurai and Avenger models in order to satisfy their new customers’ demands.

Pioneering In The Industry

In 1969, Kawasaki launched the Mach III, cementing their position as a premier manufacturer of superbikes internationally. The Z1 that followed in 1973 only increased Kawasaki’s profile in the motorcycle industry with the most powerful four-cylinder and four-stroke engine ever built housed within its elegant frame. The success of this and other models allowed the company’s American division to build a unified distribution network in order to offer better customer service to dealers and the general public alike.

Other Vehicles

Kawasaki also led the way when it came to other powersports vehicles, expanding into the personal watercraft market in 1973. This was soon followed by their first foray into all-terrain vehicles; Kawasaki’s first three-wheeled ATV was released in 1981, and their first four-wheeled model rolled off production lines in 1985. With their keen sense of what the market demands and their attention to building high-quality machines, Kawasaki products have continued to be a major success, both internationally and within the United States, and their name is recognizable to many because of the widespread appeal and popularity of their vehicles.
